The competition was conducted according to a methodology known as “parallel funding” whereby several independent teams were funded in parallel as they compete to win the competition second stage. This approach is aimed to enable the pursuit of innovative untraditional (“out of the box”) solutions, not “more of the same” solutions, to the problem stated above. A panel of judges (experts gathered from industry, MOD & academia), headed by ADRI evaluated 5 proposals. The judges chose the three most promising proposals and provided each team with funding for one year to develop their idea. At the end of the year, the judges evaluated the outcomes of the competing teams and determined a winning team that received an additional (and larger) allocation of funding to further develop their concept up to a demo or prototype.
